    Made from two-row spring barley, this malt is obtained by malting and a specific light kilning.

    Role of the malt

    Due to its low colour and high diastatic power, this malt is used

    as a base for many

    recipes. It is, of course, the base malt for the PILS and LAGER types of beer.

  • The No. 19 floor at our Great Ryburgh maltings dates back to when Crisp began and has been producing malt virtually uninterrupted since the late 19th century.

    We take our superior Maris Otter® barley and malt it in the traditional way; hand turned, germinated slowly on the floors and kilned for over three days to maximise the robust flavours associated with Maris Otter® Ale Malt. The result is a rich malt of superior quality; a true celebration of heritage and malting knowhow.

    Crisp’s Organic Malt fully complies with the strict regulations which govern the qualification of foods as ‘organic’.

    These rules and systems, having their basis in EU law, apply not only to the handling and processing of the organic barley at the malting plant, but also through the supply chain from the condition of the land sown and the provenance of the seed through to cultivation and harvesting.

    Our Light Munich Malt is created by taking Vienna Malt a stage further in the kiln. The additional heat promotes melanoidin reactions to produce rich bread crust flavours. Again, Light Munich Malt can be used as a base since the enzymes are suitably preserved in this malt.

    The use of Munich and Vienna Malts are not just for German style beers, they add a beautiful subtle complexity to many beer styles.

    Oat malt gives smoothness and body to darker beers and is particularly good in stouts.

    Our Oat Malt can be delivered in 25kg, 500kg and 1000kg bags or in bulk loads.

    Rye malt gives a characteristic spicy note to beers and can be used up to 10% of the grist to add depth of flavour.

    Wheat malt is used to enhance body and head retention; it brings a subtle smoothness to beers when used up to 15%. Beyond this percentage, it will start to create hazy Weissen/ Wit type beers.

    Dextrin malt is germinated in the process to create longer chain sugars that survive the mashing process to give higher attenuation limits and thus fuller tasting beers. It can provide extra body and improve the head retention of your brew.

    As the name suggests, this grain isn’t malted. Roasted Barley imparts a dry, intensely roasted, astringent flavour and is used in guiness style stouts and strong porter. At levels below 1.5% of the grist it can be used to adjust colour and give a dry clean finish to a beer

    Smoother than roasted barley giving full roasted flavour along with a slightly tart acridity, in small amounts this malt will give a reddish hue without becoming too intense. Use at higher levels for robust to give an edge to robust porters.

    More intense in colour and flavour with distinct roasted coffee aroma and flavour along with bittersweet dark chocolate undertones. Perfect for adding depth to brown ales and bitters and a must in strong milds, stouts and porters.
